Psychoanalytic-Buddhist Training Program in Israel

The Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) and Lama Tzong Khapa Institute are working with Ranann Kulka of the Israel Association for the Study of Subjectivity and Self Psycology and Manuel Katz of Mindfulness Project to establish an educational program in Tel Aviv for psychoanalysts who are interested in obtaining a specialized training in the field of Self Psychology integrated with a curriculum of Buddhist philosophy, psychology, and practice, with special emphasis on the development of empathy.

The training program, which is still in the process of being defined, is the first of its kind in the world in applying the age-tested methods of Buddhism for training the mind in order to bring about a profound and lasting change in the analyst. The program will last 7 years, and run 9 months a year, 3 days a week. Each week, one full day will be devoted to the thorough study of the whole range of psychoanalytical schools of thought via the unique specialization of the self psychology paradigm. Another full day will be devoted to the study of Buddhist philosophy and psychology accompanied by active engagement in its practice, especially through various traditions of meditation. The third day will be devoted to the study of general humanities – arts, history, literature, philosophy, etc., accompanied by service aimed at maintaining the school. The Institute is responsible for developing the Buddhist study and practice curriculum and in identifying suitable teachers for the various modules.

Associazione Mindfulness Project

Since 2003, Associazione Mindfulness Project has been examining the relationship between Western psychology and Buddhism in a three-year counseling program and an annual conference organized at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa. The intention of Mindfulness Project is to offer an education that is aimed at developing the inner potential of human beings even during times of suffering and difficulty. This development comes about through recognizing that in every human being there exists a dimension of well being and wisdom consisting of inner resources, intuitive knowledge, and a profound spirituality that is often veiled by the problems encountered in daily life. The events organized by Mindfulness Project at the Institute include:

Transpersonal Counseling School (La Scuola di Counseling Transpersonale Mindfulness Project)

Founded in 2004, this three-year training program is aimed at learning “how to relate” by supporting the evolution of consciousness toward a state free from egoism and selfishness, the foundation of all spiritual traditions. The curriculum integrates the most effective Western approaches for achieving personal growth and well-being with Buddhist psychology and meditation practice. A new three-year cycle is offered each year and graduates receive the diploma of “Mindfulness Counselor” recognized by Assocounseling and Sico. The course is mainly aimed at:

  • healthcare workers
  • educators
  • professionals in the field of holistic health
  • human resource managers in businesses and the work environment

This course is also suitable for those who wish to invest in their own personal growth and development.

Mindfulness Professional Training

This training program, which begins July 2011 at Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa, is organized in collaboration with Centro Italiano Studi Mindfulness (Italian Center for the Study of Mindfulness).

Mindfulness Professional Training is aimed at professionals from the fields of healthcare, psychology, education, sport, business, and management who are interested in the study of the potential of mindfulness and in the application of Mindfulness Based protocols (MBSR and MBCT) in their specific field. The course will be held in a series of modules that take place either in Rome or Pomaia. Graduates of the course will receive a diploma that qualifies them as “Mindfulness Based Instructors.”

The Mindfulness-Based protocol, already tested and authenticated in clinical environments in the United States and England, consists of an eight-week encounter that enables participants to become familiar with mindfulness meditation through cultivating the ability to live in the moment and accept whatever happens moment by moment with expectations. To come into contact with one’s own reality by means of cultivating this mental state has proved to be of great benefit to people with psychophysical pathologies such as tumors, chronic illnesses causing invalidity, AIDS, stress, sleep disturbances, depression, anxiety, digestion problems, and more.
